Top Things to Do in Peterborough This May

Whether you're a local looking for the freshest fun or a visitor exploring the city's charm, there's something exciting to do every month.

May sees the city come into full bloom – the Trent-Severn Waterway reopens for navigation of boats and paddled watercraft, we get to enjoy some sunshine and fun on patios, and there is a fresh excitement for the summer season ahead in the air.

Each month, we pull together this list of highlights focused on cultural highlights, seasonal activities, and events. You can use this list to make some incredible memories of your time in Peterborough.

May is Museum Month

In communities across Canada, particularly in the province of Ontario, May is Museums Month! This is a perfect time to explore the internationally acclaimed Canadian Canoe Museum (which has recently been named by Times Magazine in a list of World’s Greatest Places). Make a day exploring the City’s museums including the Peterborough Museum and Archives, Hutchison House Museum, and the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters Hunting and Fishing Heritage Centre.

Patio Season is Here

Do you shine a little brighter on days where al fresco dining is an option? Patio season kicks off in May, bringing opportunities to enjoy a meal, a morning coffee, a refreshing craft beer, and even some live music on restaurant patios.

Some favourite local patios include the Silver Bean Café, The Only Café (and so many others throughout the Hunter Street Café District), Ashburnham Ale House, The Publican House Brewery, and the beautiful greenspace at 100 Acre Brewing Co.

Celebrate Peterborough’s Connection to Water

Paddlers, boaters and water lovers rejoice! The Trent-Severn Waterway is a celebrated and sought-after Canadian destination this year, and was named among New York Times’ 52 Destinations to Visit in 2025.

Peterborough is the largest urban centre on the waterway, and its central location makes it a great homebase for exploration. The waterway typically opens for navigation in time for the Victoria Day weekend (third weekend of May) – a great time to get out and explore the neighbouring Kawarthas cottage country communities.

Looking for land-based ways to enjoy? Check out the Taste of the Trent-Severn for menu items at local restaurants that celebrate the region’s historic waterway. Some favourites from the City include the 386 Mezcal Margarita at La Hacienda, the Liftlock Burger at Revelstoke, and the Otonabean Espresso at The Silver Bean Cafe.

Live Music Events

May will see some incredible talent take the stage at Market Hall Performing Arts Centre including Bob Bazini (May 7), Frank Turner (May 16), and Skydiggers (May22).

Thursday evenings there will also be live music taking place at 100 Acre Brewing Co. from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.

As always, downtown venues – including Jethro’s, Black Horse Pub, and The Pig’s Ear Tavern will have live music performances throughout the week too!
